The ACM Symposium on Document Engineering (DocEng’26) will take place from August 25 to 28 in Fribourg.
As the leading global forum for experts shaping the future of document processing and AI, the symposium brings together researchers and industry professionals at the intersection of technology and content management.

During the symposium, iCoSys will host the Workshop on Legal Document Engineering (WoLDE26) on August 28. Organized by Aixiu An, Andreas Fischer, Mark Drenhaus, and Sébastien Rumley, WoLDE26 is among the first worldwide workshops dedicated specifically to document analysis within the legal domain. The event aims to bring together researchers, legal tech startups, and industry practitioners to discuss challenges in legal NLP, multilingual processing, lightweight LLMs, and agentic systems in real-world legal workflows.

To kick off the workshop, iCoSys is proud to announce that its latest research has been featured in the workshop proceedings. The paper, “The Price of Reasoning: Cost-Quality Tradeoffs in Reinforcement Learning for Neural Machine Translation,” authored by Aixiu An (iCoSys) and Michael Jungo (University of Fribourg), answers a critical question in LegalTech: do we really need massive frontier models to translate Swiss legislation?
The research demonstrates that lightweight models, fine-tuned with Reinforcement Learning with Verifiable Rewards (RLVR), can achieve near-frontier quality at a fraction of the deployment cost. To make these findings accessible to the community, the team is releasing two open-weight models fine-tuned for Swiss legal translation on Hugging Face:
